This Q&A will be continuously updated.
Circulation certification
Who is the contact person for circulation certification?
The contact person for circulation certification is Roland Achermann (roland.achermann@wemf.ch).
How can I change the data on the «front page»?
Please send questions, such as this one, concerning circulation certification to the contact person for circulation certification (roland.achermann@wemf.ch).
What do I enter in the «circulation protocol» etc. and how?
Please send questions, such as this one, concerning circulation certification to the contact person for circulation certification (roland.achermann@wemf.ch).
Contact and title qualities
Why does the WEMF survey contact and title qualities?
As part of the MACH Basic interviews, readers of a title are asked
- how often they pick up a title to read it (number of reading sessions or pick-ups)
- how many pages of the presented content (all pages of an issue) they consume (volume of reading)
- how long they read an issue of a title before finally putting it aside (time spent reading).
In addition, title loyalty is surveyed. For this purpose, readers are asked how much they would miss their title if it were no longer published.
As of when have the contact and title qualities been reported?
The CTQ key figures for groups of titles were first published in MACH Basic 2021-2. As of MACH Basic 2022-2, this qualitative information is also available for individual titles, complete editions and combinations of titles.
How are the contact and title qualities made available?
The CTQ key figures for title groups and individual titles are published in the form of tables in PDF format. Anyone who has access (password) to MACH Basic on the WEMF data portal NEXT>LEVEL can download these PDF tables using the programme functions "Download report volume" or "Download CTQ information".
The CTQ key figures are not available as calculable variables in the NEXT>LEVEL presentation of MACH Basic.
As a publisher or marketer of press titles, how do I benefit from the contact and title qualities?
With the help of the CTQ key figures, the intensive use as well as the great loyalty that the readership shows to their title in general can be proven to the advertising industry. As a result, the marketing of their own titles is supported. Likewise, the genre of print as a whole is strengthened as an advertising medium.
For publishers, the CTQ key figures can serve as benchmarks for the further development of a title.
As a media agency, how do I benefit from the contact and title qualities?
The CTQ key figures make it possible to consider not only the quantitative dimension (reach) but also a qualitative dimension in the selection of media. Overall, the CTQ key figures also provide arguments for the attractiveness of the media genre print as an advertising medium.
As an advertiser, how do I benefit from the contact and title qualities?
The CTQ key figures provide the advertising industry with more comparable performance indicators for the press media. This leads to greater transparency. Moreover, this can have a positive effect on the work of the commissioned (media) agencies in media planning.
Will I incur additional costs for the contact and title qualities?
No, you will not. The CTQ key figures are part of the MACH Basic survey, i.e. licence.
Are contact and title qualities also collected in other countries?
Information on contact and title qualities is also collected and published in the national readership studies of our neighbouring countries Germany, Austria and France. It can be concluded that this CTQ information is considered essential to the range of questions in Central and Western European joint readership research.
Dissemination statistics
Who is the contact person for dissemination statistics?
You can contact Verbreitungsstatistik@wemf.ch for dissemination statistics.
How can I enter/change data in the dissemination statistics?
If you have any questions about dissemination statistics, please contact Verbreitungsstatistik@wemf.ch
MediaDB - General
What does «MediaDB» mean?
«MediaDB» is the abbreviated name for the WEMF media database. This database contains the offers of advertising-relevant publications (print and online). When you participate in the MediaDB, these offers are visible, accessible, plannable, calculable and bookable for the Swiss advertising market at all times.
The media houses enter their data in the MediaDB themselves and thus guarantee content quality and topicality.
The MediaDB is available in three different versions: FREE, STANDARD (for functionalities, see price list) and PRO (for professionals). All three versions are accessible via the NEXT>LEVEL data portal.
MediaDB is used by all LSA media agencies as a data source for efficient ad planning.
Why should my publication(s) participate in the MediaDB?
Advantages for the media market (or for one's own publication):
- Visibility in the advertising market with all relevant publication information, i.e., basic information, rate information incl. discounts, contact information, billing information, booking information and technical specifications / printing information
- Plannability via the listing in the established data portal NEXT>LEVEL
- Bookability thanks to a comprehensive database solution
- Control, overview and editability of the recorded data thanks to the easy-to-use input tool
Benefits for the advertising market (agencies, etc.)
- Comprehensive database solution for campaign planning (analysis - calculation - booking)
- Comprehensive, transparent and comparable planning data (publication / price information)
- Simplified planning of media campaigns
- Creation of clear publication and production plans with campaign subjects
- Optimised connectivity with studies and statistics
- Individual notification for booking data
- Individually definable booking recipient per medium
- Calendar with configurable planning costs
Who uses the MediaDB and for what?
MediaDB is the Swiss platform that makes the offers of publishers visible, plannable, calculable and bookable vis-à-vis media agencies and advertising clients.
Firstly, it serves the Swiss advertising market as a source for efficient ad planning of advertising-relevant publications. The offers of the publications are transparent, clear and comparable thanks to the MediaDB. It includes all decisive data in one tool. This enables continuous planning from analysis to booking.
Moreover, the MediaDB is used by the media market (or for one’s own publication) to check and update the recorded data thanks to an easy-to-use input tool.
Who can participate in the MediaDB?
All advertising-relevant publications (print / online) can participate in the MediaDB with their booking units. In the case of print publications, these booking units include individual titles / regular editions, large print runs, complete editions, combinations, and supplements / specials.
In the case of online publications, websites, networks and spheres can participate.
How can I register my print or online publications?
The media market can register its print or online publications for participation in the MediaDB via the registration form. Other options are to register by e-mail to mediendb@wemf.ch or by telephone on +41 43 311 76 65. After signing the contract, access to the MediaDB via a personal password will be provided.
How big is the MediaDB? / How many publications does the MediaDB contain?
The MediaDB includes national and international print and online publications from Switzerland (WEMF) as well as the basic information of certified print publications from Germany (IVW) and Austria (ÖAK). The MediaDB contains all relevant publication and price information as well as booking and production data of the listed newspapers, magazines and online publications – and it is constantly growing.
Who guarantees and controls the quality of the data?
WEMF checks the data stored by the publishers for plausibility, completeness and up-to-dateness. In the event of any discrepancies, the publishers are requested to make adjustments so that the data quality is ensured at the highest possible level at all times. In addition, the support team is available to both the participating publishers and the users of the data for all concerns and uncertainties regarding data collection and data use.
How are NEXT>LEVEL, circulation statistics, circulation certification and Agency.OS related to the MediaDB?
The data of the publications (print/online) participating in the MediaDB form the basis for ensuring that these publications (print, online) are visible, accessible, plannable, calculable and bookable for the advertising market in the NEXT>LEVEL data portal.
The circulation statistics are also published in the NEXT>LEVEL data portal. They show the geographical distribution of the daily and weekly press. These statistics support the planning of regional and local print campaigns. They show in detail, according to geographical criteria, where the distributed circulations of the daily and weekly press are spread. They also illustrate how many households are reached with an advertisement in one of the participating press titles.
Circulation certification by WEMF ensures that the circulation figures (printed and online) of the Swiss press are determined according to the same criteria per category and are therefore comparable. Booking units that are certified and participate in the MediaDB also fall into a more favourable price category. (For details, please refer to the current price list for participation in the MediaDB).
Agency.OS is the leading-edge agency tool with interfaces to all WEMF data sets (e.g., the MediaDB) and to other tools (e.g., own accounting or marketing tools). Agency.OS enables all-media campaign management. By means of central customer management, Agency.OS supports agencies in keeping track of all campaigns, budgets and conditions at all times.
What is NEXT>LEVEL and how is the MediaDB related to it?
All three different versions of the MediaDB are accessible via the NEXT>LEVEL data portal (FREE, STANDARD (for functionalities see price list) and PRO (for professionals), which ensures efficient planning.
With this practical data portal for studies (e.g., MACH Basic or circulation certification) as well as statistics and databases, study participants, media agencies and advertising clients can view, evaluate and graphically display data. NEXT>LEVEL thus provides comprehensive information on media values, market positioning and user profiles of individual media.
Upon payment of the respective licence fees, an annual or daily licence for the use of data in the entire NEXT>LEVEL tool can be purchased from WEMF.
What does the MediaDB cost?
The regular invoices are sent out in January each year (i.e., the invoices for the accounting year 2023 will be sent out in January 2023). The invoice amount depends, among other things, on whether the publication(s) is (are) certified for circulation, whether it (they) is (are) individually certifiable publication(s), etc. For details, please refer to the current price list for participation in the MediaDB or contact the MediaDB contact person at mediendb@wemf.ch
What is meant by «booking unit»?
A booking unit is a publication in which advertisements can be booked.
In the case of print publications, these are individual titles / standard editions, large print runs, complete editions or combinations and supplements / specials.
In the case of online publications, these are websites, networks and spheres.
A «website» is a virtual presence of a company, a publication, etc. on the Internet. It consists of several web pages, which are usually linked to each other by a uniform navigation.
A «network» is a conglomerate of different websites / web pages.
A «sphere» is a network of thematically related websites.
The prices for participation in the MediaDB are to be understood per booking unit (for details, please refer to the current price list for participation in the MediaDB).
Why should I register the large circulations, combined circulations or GES with MediaDB in addition to the normal circulations?
If the large circulation, combi or GES can be separately booked with advertisements, it makes sense to participate in the MediaDB, as these booking units are then visible, accessible, plannable, calculable and bookable at all times for the advertising market (i.e., agencies, advertising customers, etc).
What does the addition «... GES» mean?
A print publication with the addition «... GES» is understood to be the complete edition, e.g. newspapers with head pages or partial editions that appear in the reader market under different title designations. (e.g., «Zeitung GES» consists of «Zeitung West» + «Zeitung Ost»).
What does the addition «... Kombi» mean?
A publication with the addition «... Kombi» is understood to be the combined edition of several different publications or total editions (e.g., «Schweiz Kombi» consists of «Zeitung GES» + «Publikation Schweiz» + «schweizerpublikation.ch»).
Are all the websites in my network visible in the MediaDB?
If the websites that are part of a network but cannot be individually booked are also to be visible to the advertising market, they would have to be registered separately as «not individually bookable» publications on the MediaDB.
What does «not individually bookable» mean?
A publication is «not individually bookable» if advertisements can only be booked in a type of «bundle» (e.g., print complete edition or combination, online network, etc.), i.e., not individually in the publication.
How secure is my data in the MediaDB?
Only authorised users can see and use the input screen of your publication. Login is only possible by entering the username and password. If a new password is requested, it will only be sent to the e-mail address stored in the MediaDB. The connection to the system is established securely using SSL encryption. The servers of the multi-redundant system are located exclusively in Switzerland and in GDPR-compliant countries of the European Union.
How/where does the clientele/advertising market see my data?
The advertising market accesses the data published in the MediaDB via the NEXT>LEVEL data portal. With this data portal for studies (e.g., MACH Basic, circulation certification), statistics and databases, study participants, media agencies and advertising clients can view, evaluate and graphically display data. NEXT>LEVEL provides information on media values, market positioning and user profilesof individual media.
Upon payment of the respective licence fees, an annual or daily licence for the use of data in the entire NEXT>LEVEL tool can be purchased from WEMF.
Public access (MediaDB Free Version) can be tested here.

MediaDB - Publication information
Why is my publication not listed in NEXT>LEVEL?
Publications not registered with the MediaDB are not automatically included in the database. You are welcome to register your publication(s) here.
If the publication already participates in the MediaDB but certain documents and/or essential data entries are missing, it will not be activated for publication in NEXT>LEVEL. Please complete the information and/or contact the MediaDB contact person at mediendb@wemf.ch
Publications that are registered in the MediaDB but are not listed individually cannot be found directly. They can only be found by searching for total editions, combinations or networks in which the publication in question is included.
Why is my publication displayed in NEXT>LEVEL although it does not participate in the MediaDB?
If the publication is certified, it appears in the MediaDB only with its basic information (title name, typology and circulation information, and publication interval).
The detailed information, which includes all details regarding publication dates, prices, formats, etc., is only published in the MediaDB and made available to the advertising market via the NEXT>LEVEL portal for publications that are regular participants in the MediaDB and whose data has been recorded in full. Only with a regular participation in the MediaDB, for which a fee is charged, will your publication be fully visible, accessible, plannable, calculable and bookable for the advertising market at all times.
Why don't I see my registered publication(s) in the MediaDB?
If you do not have access rights in the database for certain publications participating in the MediaDB, they will not be displayed in the MediaDB.

What should I do if my publication is discontinued?
Please inform the MediaDB contact person at mediendb@wemf.ch in good time before the end of the cancellation period (end of September of the current year for cancellation of participation in the following year).
How long will my publication remain accessible / visible / bookable and editable in the MediaDB after cancellation?
Terminated publications usually remain active in the MediaDB and «editable» for you until the end of the calendar year already paid for, i.e. they continue to be published. If you do not want this, please contact the MediaDB contact person at mediendb@wemf.ch
MediaDB - Data entry
Why do I receive (multiple) e-mails from MediaDB with requests to enter data?
Since you have been listed as the person responsible for the MediaDB account of at least one publication, you will receive reminder / prompt emails to update the data.
Why do I have to enter the data myself?
Given that the media companies enter their data themselves, quality of content and topicality are guaranteed. If you would like WEMF to do the data entry for you, this is possible for a fee. You are welcome to contact your MediaDB contact person for an offer at mediendb@wemf.ch
Can WEMF do the data entry and/or data maintenance for me?
If you would like WEMF to do the data entry for you, this is possible for a fee. You are welcome to contact the MediaDB contact person for an offer at mediendb@wemf.ch
How and where do I enter a new address or change of address for the MediaDB (publisher, invoice...)?
Please contact the person in charge at mediendb@wemf.ch
What is meant/stated by «administrative address»?
This address relates to the certification of circulation and indicates the place where the certification is physically carried out.
How can I change the «administrative address»?
If the «administrative address» changes, please inform us in an e-mail to Roland.Achermann@wemf.ch
If the publication(s) concerned does not participate in the circulation certification but does participate in the MediaDB, please inform the MediaDB contact person of this change at mediendb@wemf.ch
How can I add a new / additional person who is responsible for the account?
Please contact the MediaDB contact person at mediendb@wemf.ch
I want to correct an entry made in the MediaDB, but I cannot access the entry field.
If you want to change an entry in the circulation certification area, contact the contact person for circulation certification (roland.achermann@wemf.ch).
If you want to change an entry in the dissemination statistics area, contact the contact person for dissemination statistics (Verbreitungsstatistik@wemf.ch).
For entries in the MediaDB, click on the respective input field and enter the respective data directly or use the export / import function.
Do I have to enter all the data manually?
No. You can also use the export / import function. You can enter all publication dates into an Excel worksheet using the «export» function and upload them to the database using the «import» function. Details can be found in the instructions. WEMF offers the option of recording and maintaining the data of your publication(s) at flat rates. Please contact the MediaDB contact person at mediendb@wemf.ch
How does the export / import function work?
All publication dates can be entered into an Excel worksheet using the «export» function, and then uploaded using the «import» function. Do not make any changes to the formatting of the table and make sure that you always confirm by clicking on «save current status» if your entries are to be transferred to the MediaDB.
When entering data into the MediaDB, you will find info buttons («i») with help texts next to the headings.
Details can be found in the instructions. Please contact the person in charge at mediendb@wemf.ch
Why can't I make any changes when entering the tariffs or why can’t I import the tariffs?
The database does not recognise the Excel list during import if anything has been changed in the formatting of the Excel list exported from the database (labels, etc. or formatting in the cells). Therefore, when inserting data into the Excel list, always make sure to insert only text or value (without formatting). If an already existing «current value» is to be changed, always enter the value only in the column «new value» and with indication of the date from which the value is to be displayed (in the column «mutation» or «valid from»).
Why are some values displayed in red?
Numbers coloured red indicate that there may be an incorrect or «illogical» entry for the database (e.g. the portrait to landscape price ratio).
Please check these numbers. If your entries are still correct, the red mark has no further implications for the publication in NEXT>LEVEL and you can ignore it.
Why is the data I have already entered no longer displayed?
Please repeat the entry and make sure that you always confirm by clicking on «save current status» when entering your data into the database.
If data already published in the MediaDB no longer appears or still does not appear after clicking the save button, please contact the MediaDB contact person at mediendb@wemf.ch
MediaDB - Publication dates
How can I correct / delete entries that have already been made?
You can correct entries that have already been made by replacing, cancelling or deleting the relevant entry in the database with an entry in «new value» and specifying the «valid from» date, depending on the area. To delete entries already made, e.g., publication dates, mark the relevant line(s) by clicking on them and right-click to select «delete» in the context menu.
Afterwards, always click on «save current status» to transfer this entry to the database.
You can overwrite the entry, e.g. in the closing date field, by clicking on the corresponding field, entering the desired date and clicking on «save current status».
You cannot make any subsequent changes to the exported publication date Excel list.
Can I enter several dates at once?
Yes, you can use the «export publication data» function to enter all publication dates in an Excel worksheet and upload them using «import publication data». Please make sure that you always confirm by clicking on «save current status» if your details are to be transferred to the MediaDB.
Why does the import not work?
The database does not recognise the Excel list during import if something has been changed in the formatting of the Excel list exported from the database (labels, etc. or formatting in the cells). Therefore, when inserting data into the Excel list, always make sure to insert only text or value (without formatting).
If an already existing «current value» is to be changed, always enter the value only in the column «new value» and with indication of the date from which the value is to be displayed (in the column «mutation» or «valid from»).
Please make sure that you always confirm by clicking on «save current status» if your details are to be transferred to the MediaDB.
Why or how are the publication dates of the previous year displayed?
You have a full overview of the publication dates of the current year and future dates entered by you via your access in the MediaDB. The advertising market only sees the next 60 publication dates in the future in the detailed view of the MediaDB. In the booking calendar of the booking module, however, all the publication dates you have already entered are available for booking.
Can / Must I delete the publication dates of the previous year?
You can enter the next valid publication dates at any time without having to overwrite or delete past or currently valid dates. Simply add the dates to the list in consecutive order.
What is the meaning of the consecutive numbering displayed to the left of the publication dates and can this be changed?
This consecutive numbering serves only as an overview / reference for you, it cannot be changed and it is not made visible to the advertising market. The numbering does not refer to your publication numbering (issue numbers).
Where can I enter special editions, additional information, etc.?
You can enter further details in one of the comment fields under the «publication» tab, as required. These will then be made visible to the advertising market via the NEXT>LEVEL data portal in the detailed view of your publication/booking unit.
MediaDB - Booking recipient
What / Who is the «booking recipient»?
By specifying the «booking recipient», you define in the MediaDB the channels through which the advertising orders are to be received (deposit or selection of predefined contact information). Multiple selection / specification of booking recipients is possible.
When entering data in the MediaDB, you will find info buttons («i») with help texts next to the headings.
What are «predefined booking recipients» / «own booking recipients»?
By specifying the «own booking recipient», you define in the MediaDB the channels through which the advertising orders are to be accepted (storing the respective contact information).
If you want to update your details later, click on the name of your own booking recipient and enter the data in the «edit» input mask.
You also have the option to select and activate your corresponding booking recipient from existing «predefined booking recipients». Multiple selection / entry of booking recipients is possible.
When entering data in the MediaDB, you will find info buttons («i») with help texts next to the headings.
What does «1 order per publication» / «1 order per date» mean?
The booking recipients for advertising placements are defined in the input mask under «booking»à «booking recipients». You also specify here whether you want to receive «1 order per publication» (consolidated display of all booked issues of a publication in one order document) or «1 order per date» (one order document is generated per publication date) for a booking.
When entering data in the MediaDB, you will find info buttons («i») with help texts next to the headings.
Why don't I receive any bookings via the MediaDB?
If your publication does not yet participate in the MediaDB, no bookings are possible. Publications not registered with the MediaDB are not automatically included in the database. You are welcome to register your publication(s) here.
If the publication already participates in the MediaDB, but certain documents and/or essential data entries are missing, it will not be activated for publication in NEXT>LEVEL. Please complete the information or contact the person in charge at mediendb@wemf.ch
Please make sure that you have set the booking recipient to «active».
This is done under «booking recipient». You can either activate the desired recipient automatically from the next day by clicking in the field under «new value» or activate it by directly entering the desired validity date in the cell «valid from».
Please always confirm by clicking on «save current status» if your details are to be transferred to the database.
If the legally signed contract for participation has not yet been received by WEMF, the publication / booking unit will not be activated for you in the MediaDB for data entry, as a result of which the information relevant to a booking (e.g. booking recipient) cannot be made available to the advertising market on the NEXT>LEVEL data portal.
MediaDB - Contract
When can I cancel the participation of my publication in the MediaDB?
The PARTIES may terminate the contract at the end of each year (31 December) subject to a notice period of 3 months (i.e. by 30 September of the year in question at the latest).
How long is the contract for the MediaDB valid or do I have to renew it?
The contract for participation in the MediaDB is automatically renewed until it is actively terminated.
When will my publication appear in the MediaDB?
Once the contract is signed, the data of publications participating in the MediaDB will be made available via the NEXT>LEVEL data portal only after the data has been checked and approved by WEMF.
